Grey Bruce Health Services Hospitals In Overcapacity: Meaford, Owen Sound and 3 others

15/01/18
Non-Urgent patients are asked to AVOID Emergency Departments. See below for recommendations on alternatives to emergency departments for non-urgent care. Link to walk-in services below.

Please be advised that Grey Bruce Health Services Owen Sound Regional Hospital is in overcapacity status, as are all our other five GBHS hospitals (Lion’s Head, Markdale, Meaford, Southampton and Wiarton).  We are currently working to accommodate approximately 20 patients who need to be admitted.

We are asking all community partners to be aware of this situation, and to advise patients that if their issue is not urgent, to avoid our Emergency Departments and to consider seeing a family doctor or look for other options if possible (Telehealth Ontario, walk-in clinics, pharmacy, etc.)

To accommodate patients requiring a bed we are reviewing all of our options, including rescheduling some elective surgeries.

This overcapacity situation is being caused in part by influenza outbreaks in several long-term care homes throughout the region, which is limiting our ability to transfer patients out/back to long-term care. In addition, we are seeing flu patients in our ERs, as well as a higher than usual volume of patients with a variety of illnesses.
