Noise Control

Noise Control

Municipal Law Enforcement Officers are responsible for the enforcement of numerous Town bylaws, including noise control.  The Noise Bylaw regulates different types of “noise” and when specific types of noises are prohibited.  “Noise” is any unwanted sound that is clearly audible and of such a volume that it would be likely to disturb the inhabitants of the municipality.

Some examples include: Electronic or musical noise (from radio, television, stereo, or from any musical or sound-producing instrument or device of any kind) played or operated in a manner or with volume likely to disturb the peace or repose of any inhabitant is generally prohibited at any time in residential areas.  Likewise, the persistent barking of a dog or noise from any domestic pet or from any animal kept for commercial purposes is not permitted to disturb residents of Blue Mountains at any time.  Domestic tools, powered or non-powered (such as lawnmowers, leaf blowers, saws and the like, other than those used for snow removal) are not permitted to disturb the residents of Blue Mountains between the hours of 11:00pm and 7:00am (9:00am on Sundays).  Regulated hours of construction are weekdays between 7:00am and 7:00pm, and Saturdays between 8:00am and 1:00pm

Noise By-law Relief Requests

From time to time, requests for relief from the provisions of the noise by-law are received and, in some instances, are supportable in that they promote charitable, educational, community or other objectives of the Town, or, there is an overwhelming need due to weather and/or significant time constraints.    Please refer to policy document POL.BL.15.02 in the downloads section of this page for further information and procedures for making application for relief from the noise by-law.  An application form is also available in the downloads section.
