Our Waste Disposal Situation

Our community's long term garbage disposal options are at a cross roads. Despite even the strongest efforts to reduce and recycle we will still have a remaining amount of garbage to manage responsibly. A number of garbage management options have been considered and two basic options have emerged as the most practical and cost effective disposal methods for the community's garbage. Recently citizens were invited to participate in a poll, asking them to choose their preferred option, whether to expand our current landfill or export our sollid waste.  The poll is now closed. The Town would like to thank all participants.  Results will be presented at a future meeting of Council.

*The poll was not intended to be a scientific sample of local opinion. Instead it was a way for residents to understand the issues and share their views with members of  Council. Respondents were not randomly selected, but selected themselves to participate in the poll.

Financial Considerations of Long-Term Disposal Needs

Within the next few months Town Council will need to make a decision on which long term solid waste disposal option to move forward upon. The latest report and presentation found on the side bar identifies the financial considerations of six solid waste management options. Depending on the option selected the impact on taxation could be from 3.38% to over 7.5% based on cost calculations complete to date. In addition to being financially prudent, the best option for the community should also provide the desired level of service, be environmentally preferred, allow flexibility and be socially acceptable.
