Leed Certification

Leed Certification

Based on needs identified through the community consultations and the Town's commitment to sustainability, our new Town Hall is a LEED Gold Building.

LEED is an acronym for Leaders in Energy Efficiency and Environmental Design wherein certification is determined on the basis of a point system. When we talk about having green building elements we are talking about creating a LEED certified building. In Canada, the LEED Program is delivered by the Canadian Green Building Council www.cagbc.org.

LEED Certification is a desirable component of the new Town Hall. All of the environmental initiatives which are part of the design are to be fully documented for LEED certification. On average, LEED certified buildings are 44% more energy efficient than their conventional counterparts.

LEED was created to accomplish the following:

  • Define "green building" by establishing a common standard of measurement
  • Promote integrated, whole-building design practices
  • Recognize environmental leadership in the building industry
  • Stimulate green competition
  • Raise consumer awareness of green building benefits
  • Transform the building market

Green Building Council members, representing every sector of the building industry, developed and continue to refine LEED. The rating system addresses six major areas:

  • Sustainable sites
  • Water efficiency
  • Energy and atmosphere
  • Materials and resources
  • Indoor environmental quality
  • Innovation and design process

Different LEED versions have varied scoring systems based on a set of required "Prerequisites" and a variety of "Credits" in the six major categories listed above. In LEED v2.2 for new construction and major renovations for commercial buildings there are 69 possible points and buildings can qualify for four levels of certification:

  • Certified - 26-32 points (non-innovation points)
  • Silver - 33-38 points
  • Gold - 39-51 points
  • Platinum - 52-69 points

LEED certification is obtained after submitting an application documenting compliance with the requirements of the rating system. Certification is granted solely by the Green Building Council responsible for issuing the LEED system used on the project.

New Town Hall Energy Efficiency

Annual Energy Usage Baseline Building New Town Hall
Elec (kWh) 506,000 348,000
Gas (ekWh) 359,000 9,000
CO2 Emitted (tonnes) 140 60

The Town's commitment to constructing an energy efficient and LEED Certified building demonstrates significant environmental leadership and will be a demonstrable project with respect to sustainable design.
