Town Hall Project Wins Prestigious Award
The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) announced that among the winners of its 2011 Sustainable Communities Award, The Blue Mountains was recognized as a recipient of the award for its work in remediation of a Brownfield property, which now serves as the site of The Blue Mountains LEED Certified New Town Hall.
Mayor Ellen Anderson stated, “It is a distinct honour to receive this award on behalf of our community, elected officials and staff. This award symbolizes the path we are on to create a sustainable community. I would also like to recognize and thank our Director of Planning and Building, David Finbow, and all of those with whom he worked: elected officials, staff, our residents, Chamberlain Architecture Construction Management, and the construction and trades industry for their work in this remediation and the subsequent construction of our new Town Hall.”
She added, “This property will serve to be an example of sustainable building, a community gathering space and a place where together, elected officials, staff and our community, will work together to define and realize our dream for this wonderful community of ours.”
“This year’s award winners are prime examples of the type of environmental leadership communities are showing on the front lines of sustainable development in Canada,” said Hans Cunningham, president of FCM and director of the Regional District of Central Kootenay, B.C. “Municipalities are where the rubber hits the road on sustainable development and climate change.’’
The Awards are designed to profile municipal projects that can stand as best practice models of sustainability for other Canadian communities.
