Waste Collection
The waste collection program includes curbside and centralized (for multi unit properties) collection of recyclables and garbage. A wide variety of paper and packaging wastes are source separated (by you – thank you), further sorted and collected at curbside (by the drivers – thank you). Additional sorting occurs at a material recovery facility and preparation for shipment to an end market. The materials from your household are then processed into raw materials that are finally made into new products. It is a long trip, but worth the effort, to reduce the need for virgin resources and reduce the energy used to obtain resources needed to support many human activities.
Approximately, 35% of our curbside waste is recovered through recycling – the rest is landfilled at our local facility. Recent observations of curbside waste show that much of the garbage bag is made up of un-captured recyclables. To encourage more recycling, back yard composting, reducing and reusing the Town has a one (plus one with a tag) bag limit. We are also exploring new diversion efforts in the form of a kitchen organics field test. Visit the links on the right-hand side of the page for information on how to divert more of your solid waste from landfill and help the environment!
Curbside waste and recyclables collection is also conducted for all retail, restaurants and other commercial locations that can conform to the Town’s one bag limit. The commercial locations have the ability to set blue and grey box materials out for collection. For convenience and larger quantities commercial locations can purchase roll-out carts. See the detailed commercial recycling information and application/agreement download on the side bar.
