Winter Road Maintenance
The Town's Roads Division is responsible for winter road maintenance on roads assumed by the Town, including plowing, sanding, and salting operations.
All maintenance standards are based on post-event operations (i.e., after a snowfall or storm event) and adhere to Town's Minimum Maintenance Standards. Many factors, including temperature, precipitation, forecasts, road surface, and traffic volumes, determine road maintenance operations.
The Roads Division works diligently to clear snow and ice quickly from the roadways; however, roads may become snow-covered during certain hours and under certain weather conditions. Drivers are expected to exercise extra caution in these situations.
Winter Parking Restrictions
Winter parking restrictions are necessary to ensure snow removal operations can be completed safely and effectively. Overnight parking on Town roads is prohibited annually between November 1st and April 1st from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.
For more information on parking, please visit the Parking & Public Transit page.
Resident Snow Removal
While maintaining property in the winter, residents cannot deposit snow or ice on a Town roadway, including the shoulder, sidewalk, walkway, boulevard, or ditch. This is regulated by the Town's By-law to Regulate the Installation of Works on Town Land and Establish a Process to Issue Land Use Permit.
Significant Weather Event
The Town may declare a Significant Weather Event when the weather forecast or actual weather conditions meet certain criteria. For more information, please visit the Significant Weather Event page.
Flood Prevention & Response
Throughout the winter, crews are responsible for opening up frozen culverts, ditches, and outlets to Georgian Bay to prevent flooding from temperature fluctuations.
Crews diligently monitor water levels and weather conditions to avoid flooding from spring runoff; however, uncontrollable factors such as heavy rainfall may cause localized flooding. Residents are asked to be aware and prepared for the risk of flooding.
To report localized flooding, please contact the Operations Department. If it is an emergency, please call 911.
