Town of The Blue Mountains Council has appointed Bill Abbotts to fill the vacant Councillor position for the remainder of the 2018 – 2022 Term of Council.
The appointment was made earlier today at the Special Meeting of Council at which the four candidates who applied for the position were given the opportunity to address Council to outline their experience and qualifications. Each Member of Council was given the opportunity to ask each applicant two questions. A recording of the meeting has been posted to the Agendas, Minutes and Reports webpage.
Mr. Abbotts was born and raised in The Blue Mountains and has lived in Thornbury with his wife Susan since 1979. The Abbotts family has been in the Thornbury community for nearly five generations with an extensive history of volunteering within the community. In addition, Mr. Abbotts served for nine years on the former Town of Thornbury Council, in which he played a significant role in the community and in the development of the Thornbury Harbour. As an active transportation advocate, Mr. Abbotts has dedicated his time to improving cycling safety within the community and has also served as a member of the Leisure Activities Plan steering committee. Most recently, Mr. Abbotts served as the volunteer lead and was responsible for developing the logistics plan for the COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics held at Beaver Valley Community Centre in Thornbury.
Mr. Abbotts will be formally sworn in as a new Member of Council at the Monday, March 14, 2022 Council Meeting. The Council Meeting will be live-streamed to the Town website. Following the meeting, Mr. Abbotts will participate in a series of onboarding and training meetings relative to the new role as a Member of Council.
Background Information
The vacant Councillor position was created due to the appointment of Peter Bordignon to the position of Deputy Mayor, from his previous role as Councillor. The Deputy Mayor position was declared vacant following the passing of Deputy Mayor Rob Potter. Council voted to use an appointment process to fill the vacant Councillor position at the January 31, 2022 Council Meeting.
