Stormwater Management

The effective management of stormwater is a key element of environmental protection and sustainability. Without proper management, stormwater can cause flooding, pollution and damage to our environment. The Town’s stormwater system consists of ponds, drains, sewers and other systems that collect and clean the water before it flows back into rivers, lakes, or the ground.

CLI ECA Program

The Consolidated Linear Infrastructure Environmental Compliance Approval (CLI ECA) program gives municipalities the ability to approve low-risk infrastructure on behalf of the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks. This streamlines the process and provides the Town with the approval authority for stormwater infrastructure.

Stormwater Management Ponds

Stormwater management ponds are engineered and built to collect and treat rainfall and surface water runoff. The ponds are usually found in neighbourhoods, where stormwater can easily be collected and treated.

The ponds collect stormwater and, as time passes, any dirt, sediment and pollutants contained in the water settle to the bottom of the pond. When the pond fills to its capacity, the clean water on top spills out at a controlled rate. The Town periodically removes sediment from the bottom of the ponds to ensure they maintain their capacity.

Safety Tips

  • Do not use stormwater management ponds for fishing, swimming, boating or skating
  • Do enjoy the scenery through passive activities such as walking and bird watching
  • Do not allow children and pets around the pond shoreline
