CAMPERDOWN TEA & HISTORY
Saturday July 28th from 1 to 3pm step back in time at the Craigleith Heritage Depot and discover Camperdown's history, from its farming heritage to its mineral spa and resorts. Have tea and a chat with author Mabel (Reekie) Almond as she shares her deep knowledge of the area. Share your own photos and memories of Camperdown, as museum staff are on hand to preserve your memories for future generations.
Located at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment and reaching out to the bay, Camperdown stretches from Georgian Peaks to Grey Road 2. The first to settle here were John and Agnes Reekie. John’s brother George Reekie was the first mail carrier who is credited with naming the area Camperdown.
Throughout the 19th century Camperdown grew with more families joining to farm along the base of the escarpment. Hotels and a mineral spa developed here for summer travellers looking to take the waters and enjoy the summer resort setting. Other small business owners also established themselves in this rural community. The railway came in 1872 bringing tourists seeking a summer holiday and access to new markets for local farmers and businesses.
Maps, books and images of the area will be on display for you to discover the unique history of this beautiful area. If you ever wanted to know more about the Camperdown area and its families, or have stories and photographs of your own to share, why not drop in this afternoon for a little tea and a lot of history at the Craigleith Heritage Depot.
