Thornbury Jazzworks Donates 30 Ukuleles to BVCS
The music program at Beaver Valley Community School (BVCS) has a new method of introducing students to instrumental music. Now students start playing recorders in grade 4 and students in grade 5 have the opportunity to play the ukulele.
BVCS music teacher Melanie Kearns promoted the idea to start the ukulele program in grade 5. Although the focus is on the grade 5, other age groups are also interested in learning to play the ukulele, which provides students with a greater opportunity to develop an ear for pitch and learn to appreciate harmonies as well.
30 ukuleles needed for the program were donated by THORNBURY JAZZWORKS, including a special contribution from Mr. Larry Gross, a Jazz at the Library supporter. Stay tuned, who knows, some day there could be a full size Ukulele Orchestra making music right here in The Blue Mountains.
