Town of The Blue Mountains is recognized as a Youth Friendly Community from Play Works
The Town of The Blue Mountains is thrilled with its latest achievement of being recognized as a Youth Friendly Community from Play Works. The Blue Mountains is now a Designated Silver Youth Friendly Community, joining a list of other municipalities committed to serving youth aged 13 to 19.
Play Works, an independent group of organizations committed to encouraging and promoting a greater investment in youth play, established the Youth Friendly Community Recognition Program in 2005. It acknowledges the great work that is being done in communities across Ontario to ensure that youth (ages 13-19) have continuous access to opportunities for leadership and engagement ranging from arts to recreation to civic leadership.
The Youth Friendly Community Recognition Program of Play Works acknowledges communities that have invested in opportunities for youth in recreation, sports, arts, drama, volunteerism and leadership development. Youth Friendly Communities must meet several criteria that demonstrate a strong commitment to engaging youth between the ages of 13 to 19.
A group made up of representatives from local organizations, including Town of The Blue Mountains, Blue Mountains Public Library, and Beaver Valley Outreach, met monthly and worked on the application process. Thanks to the support of community youth and other local, youth-serving organizations who contributed, the application was successful and helped to achieve the Silver Designation.
The Town was officially presented with the award at the Youth Friendly Community recognition reception, ceremony, and gala banquet at Blue Mountain Resort on March 28th. Accepting the award was TBM Councillor Andrea Matrosovs, Liz Saunders TBM Community Services, Emma Barker Blue Mountains Public Library, local youth Jaydon Klein, Emma Chapman, Arianna Lachey, and Emily Stewart, Melri Wright BVO, Jason Weppler Grey Bruce Health, and Ryan Gibbons TBM Community Services.
