April 8, 2026 - Return to work plan
SMRS Construction has informed the Town that they would like to return to the site as soon as possible to complete the restoration work and rectify deficiencies. This work is expected to commence over the next few weeks, pending weather and conditions. Further updates will be posted and shared when specific timelines are known.
March 26, 2026 - Update on remaining work
Paving of disturbed areas within the Substandard Watermain Replacement Phase 3 project area was not completed in fall of 2025 due to concerns with wet soil and compaction. The Town will be meeting with the contractor in early May to review the site and develop a schedule for final restoration and paving. Prior to any work resuming, a Geotechnical Engineer will be providing confirmation that conditions are appropriate to complete paving. Updates to this timeline will be provided as they are confirmed.
December 15, 2025 - Watermain installation complete
SMRS Construction has completed installation and commissioning of the new watermain. Final restoration activities including paving will be completed in 2026 following the winter. Further details will be shared once dates have been confirmed.
November 15, 2025 – Watermain connections upcoming
SMRS Construction plans to make connections to the new watermain this week, and will also be completing the directional drilling work underneath Highway 26 to connect to the watermain on Peel Street North. This connection work will result in some temporary water outages for properties in the project area. Written notice has been delivered to impacted properties.
October 20, 2025 – Work shifting to Peel Street South
SMRS Construction will be shifting their focus this week to Peel Street South between Alfred Street and Highway 26. Lane restrictions will be in place as watermain installation begins, followed by road construction.
October 7, 2025 – Temporary water service interruption
SMRS Construction plans to make watermain connections on Wednesday, October 8. As a result of this, properties in the area of Baring Street, Alice Street, Alfred Street, Lansdowne Street and Beaver Street will experience a temporary water service interruption between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Written notices have been delivered to impacted properties.
September 25, 2025 – Watermain installation on Alice Street
SMRS Construction has completed directional drilling to install the new watermain on Alice Street. They plan to pressure test these sections of pipe later this week. Once they have received their permit for the transfer of excess soils in accordance with the province's new regulations, they will be digging on Alice Street to make the final connections. A temporary watermain will be installed to ensure water service is maintained to properties while the work is being completed. Work activity will remain primarily on Alice Street until these connections are completed.
August 28, 2025 – Directional drilling progressing on Alice Street
SMRS Construction has been making good progress on Phase 3 of the Substandard Watermain Replacement project. They're currently working on directional drilling of the new watermain on Alice Street. Once the drilled sections are complete, they will begin open excavation to connect the segments of new watermain. Work will remain primarily focused on Alice Street over the coming weeks, but there may be some additional work to complete service installations closer to the intersection of Baring Street.
August 25, 2025 – Temporary intersection closure
SMRS construction has informed the Town that they will need to temporarily close the intersection of Baring Street and Alice Street West on Monday, August 25. The intersection is expected to reopen before end of day. All traffic is asked to avoid this area and use alternative routes in the meantime.
July 30, 2025 – Alice St. W between Peel St. S and Baring St Road Closure
The Town would like to advise residents that the section of Alice Street West, between Peel Street South and Baring Street, will be closed for the duration of the project. This portion of the road will be used by the Contractor as a staging area. Please note that no watermain upgrade work is planned for this section of the road.
The location was selected as it is a gravel road with minimal impact to surrounding properties, as there are no residences in the immediate area.
July 25, 2025 - Construction Notice issued
The Town has issued the Construction Notice for Phase 3 of the Substandard Watermain Replacement Program. SMRS Construction is expected to mobilize to the site to begin work in early August.
