The Town has initiated the process to develop a Transportation Master Plan, to plan for future transportation needs within The Blue Mountains and to better integrate with other transportation plans in the South Georgian Bay region. The plan will include a comprehensive community review to assess and develop a strategy for various modes of transportation, including cars, trucks, public transportation and active transportation, and to set out an action plan for increased public and vehicle safety in the Town, and how that connects with other municipalities in the South Georgian Bay region.
“As our community sees significant population growth, it is important that we continue to plan for sustainable development in the community and provide residents with a safe, reliable and resilient transportation system that integrates with the transportation plans of the many municipalities in the area,” says Councillor and Chair of the Transportation Committee, Rob Sampson. “This plan will develop a vision, create tangible actions and policies that will help address our community’s immediate transportations needs, while also setting a course for a sustainable and integrated transportation system in the future.”
To ensure a comprehensive approach, the project will be undertaken in phases, beginning with a community assessment that aims to identify and define transportation and land-use in the Town. Throughout each phase, community and stakeholder engagement will be fundamental to providing Town staff a detailed and robust understanding of the community’s needs and desires to be considered when identifying various actions and policies included within the finalized plan adopted by Council.
“Our transportation network serves as the backbone of our community, helping to shape and define what our community looks like and how our residents, services and goods connect throughout the Town and the greater South Georgian Bay region,” says Mayor Alar Soever. “It is imperative that as we set our community’s vision for the next 50 years, we adopt a plan that envisions sustainable transportation system through a forward-thinking, regional approach.”
To launch the project, the Town has developed a dedicated project webpage where residents and members of the public can keep engaged with the project’s details and key dates.
