Notice- Town Purchases Property to Support Strategic Long-Term Planning

The Blue Mountains Council unanimously approved the purchase of a 32-acre property at the western edge of Thornbury for $3,450,000

The Town of The Blue Mountains would like to advise the public that at the February 22, 2021 Council Meeting, The Blue Mountains Council unanimously approved the purchase of a 32-acre property at the western edge of Thornbury for $3,450,000. The property located at 125 Peel Street extends to the intersection of Grey Road 113 and Highway 26.

“We are extremely fortunate to be able to acquire such a well-located piece of property which has frontage on both Highway 26 and County Road 113,” explained Mayor Alar Soever. “The property has been considered as a strategic property of interest for a number of years by the Town. The purchase of the property by Council will enable the Town to strategically plan for community growth and provide for municipal infrastructure needs.”

Located within the Town’s Official Plan Future Secondary Planning Area, the 32-acre property has been long considered a key strategic property of interest by the Town. The close proximity to the Tomahawk Recreation Complex will provide future opportunities for both properties. In addition, this acquisition will provide the Town with an increased level of development control over the Highway 26 corridor as well as the opportunity to consider how best to utilize the property for a variety of potential uses, which are outlined as high-level suggestions in staff report FAF.21.040 Purchase of 125 Peel Street.

“We know that with future growth, there will be the need for new facilities and infrastructure,” stated Shawn Everitt, Chief Administrative Officer. “By being proactive and acquiring the property we need now, we are making a prudent investment in our future. Council has taken a proactive and strategic approach to acquire lands that provide long-term opportunities that will continue to support community growth and development and position the Town to execute upon the many strategic plans currently under development through the great work of the Committees of Council.”
