Food Premises Owners & Operators - Contact Public Health Before You Open a Business

Under the law you are required to notify the health unit of your intention to operate a food premises. You must include your name, contact information and the location of the food premises in the notice [Health Protection and Promotion Act, S. 16 (2) and Ontario Regulation 493/17, Food Premises, S.5].

Follow these steps:

Ask to speak with your Public Health Inspector to:

  • Review applicable regulations and relevant standards
  • Receive information, advice and support
  • Review floor plans and equipment needs
  • Schedule an opening inspection before you officially open

Food Premises include, but are not limited to:

  • Restaurants, cafeterias, and take-outs
  • Daycare, long-term care, retirement homes, homes for special care
  • Mobile premises
  • Catering companies
  • Retail butcher shops
  • Convenience stores
  • Recreational camps
  • Special events and some farmers' markets
