The Town of The Blue Mountains would like to advise members of the public that Wednesday, September 30, 2026, will mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. The Town and the Blue Mountains Public Library (BMPL) invite the community to recognize the day by reflecting on the impacts of the residential school system, listening to Indigenous voices and continuing to learn about truth, reconciliation and healing.
To honour this day, the Town will fly the Truth and Reconciliation flag from September 23 to October 1, with a formal proclamation ceremony taking place at the Riverwalk Flag Pole by Town Hall on September 30 at 9:00 a.m. to recognize the victims and survivors of Residential Schools across Canada. Those attending are encouraged to wear orange in recognition of Orange Shirt Day and in support of Residential School Survivors, their families and the ongoing work of Reconciliation.
“The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an important time to reflect on the history and lasting impacts of the residential school system and to honour Indigenous Peoples, families and communities,” said Mayor Andrea Matrosovs. "Reconciliation is an ongoing process that requires us to listen, learn and deepen our understanding of Indigenous histories, experiences and perspectives. This day provides an opportunity to reflect on what we have learned, recognize the work that remains and continue moving forward with intention, respect and a shared commitment to Truth and Reconciliation.”
There are a number of upcoming local events, programs and resources for community members interested in learning more about Indigenous histories, cultures and perspectives, including:
- Blue Mountains Public Library (BMPL): Explore BMPL’s Indigenous Reads and Recent Reads on Indigenous Realities collections, watch the REEL History: Indigenous History of the Blue Mountains, or visit the Indigenous History exhibit at Craigleith Heritage Depot Museum & Archive.
- Upcoming BMPL programming: Join an Art Workshop with Indigenous-owned local business Wild & Glorious on September 23, attend a Cedar Salve Workshop & Teachings with Roots & Raven on November 14, and explore Inuit Culture, Storytelling & Artifacts with the Urban Inuit Identity Project on November 19.
- Awen’ Gathering Place in Collingwood: Visit this local space for Indigenous teachings, learning, and reflection.
- First Nations Public Library Week: From October 1 to 4, learn more about First Nations libraries, communities and Indigenous knowledge through the Ontario Library Service’s program schedule.
