The Town of The Blue Mountains urges residents and visitors to be considerate of what they are flushing down the toilet and to stop flushing sanitary wipes, even if the package says that the wipes are flushable.
In late February, Town staff responded to an after-hours incident involving a flooded basement caused by a blockage in the manhole outside of the home. The blockage was caused by a significant mass of sanitary wipes, which had completely closed off the sewer. This incident has impacted multiple residents in the area and serves as just one example of the damage that flushing sanitary wipes down the toilet can cause to critical infrastructure.
Sanitary wipes, or other harmful items, place additional and unnecessary strain onto the Town’s wastewater system and infrastructure, so please remember to only flush toilet paper.
Other products that should NOT BE flushed down the toilet include:
- Food Waste/ Dressings & Sauces
- Fats, Grease or Oil
- Paint and hazardous waste
- Cat Litter
- Bandages
- Fabric Items
- Deceased fish or pets
- Diapers
- Pads, Tampons and Applicators
