The former 130 King Street West property has been home to two tennis courts historically used by the Cameron Shores Tennis Club. In 2024, Council directed staff to complete a community engagement process to consider recreational uses for the site. Around the same time, a private group came forward proposing that the site be used for a regional, 4-court, indoor tennis facility. A public survey was completed and a Public Information Centre was held to gather feedback from the community. Details regarding this phase of the project can be found on the Recreational Development of 130 King Street West project page.

Upon receiving the results of the community engagement efforts, Council directed staff to proceed with rehabilitation of the existing tennis courts and general improvements to the property including a formalized recreation trail, parking and access from Peel Street North. The property address has been formally changed to 208 Peel Street North.

Why Now?

The existing tennis courts have fallen into disrepair, and the property as a whole needs to be cleaned up to improve visibility, safety and useability for the public.

Project Updates

June 23, 2026 - Council Meeting verbal update

A verbal update on the project was provided during the Council Meeting on Monday, June 22. Ryan Gibbons, the Town's Director of Community Services, noted that the formal address of the property has been changed to 208 Peel Street North. He also provided background on Council's previous direction regarding the elements to be included in the park, and explained why staff had not pursued deeper levels of public engagement on the incorporation of these elements into the preliminary site design. Consultation on opportunities for future phases of site development, including a proposed playground and further trail connections, is expected to be completed this summer. Director Gibbons also explained that tree removals completed to date have been performed to allow for previously-approved improvements to be completed, to address invasive species and to improve sightlines into the park for user safety. Inspections for active migratory bird nests were completed prior to the removal of these trees. He also acknowledged and apologized for not providing notice before these necessary tree removals were completed.

The update can be heard at the 4:17:35 mark of the meeting recording.

Community Information Plan

Preliminary designs have been completed including the elements approved by Council through the 2026 Town Budget. Town Staff and the Landscape Architect have identified opportunities for further enhancements including a playground, additional seating and shade. These elements will be considered through further public consultation and presented for budget approval if they are supported by the community.
