Change to Town Building Permit Submission Requirements

The Town of The Blue Mountains would like to advise the public that the building permit submission requirements for the Town have changed. All building designs that include engineered wood products or engineered truss systems shall be signed by the BCIN qualified designer, or stamped by an Architect or Engineer, to acknowledge that they have reviewed the documentation in coordination with the proposed permit drawings.

Please see the list below of all the information that is required in the submitted documents:
-    Truss layout to be stamped by the BCIN designer/Engineer/Architect
-    Engineered flooring layout to be stamped by the BCIN designer/Engineer/Architect
-    Truss and flooring layouts are to note the size and type of all required hangers
-    Truss and flooring layouts are to note bearing for any multi-ply flooring members and any 2-ply (and greater) girder trusses

The requirement for these changes will take effect September 1st, 2021.

Individual truss details, stamped by a Professional Engineer, will continue to be accepted by the Building Department not less than 10 days prior to a framing inspection. The individual truss details are not required to be submitted at time of permit application.

Ontario Building Code Amendments

Notice to Building Code Users – The 2012 Building Code Compendium is amended by O.Reg. 88/19 to harmonize the Building Code with the 2015 national construction codes with an effective date of January 1,2022. The changes are related to stairs, guards, and handrails.

Designers are strongly encouraged to review the amendments prior to the effective date, since the changes are quite significant. As an example, for private stairs the new minimum stair run for rectangular treads increases from 210mm to 255mm. The new tread size increases the length of stairs in most dwellings by 630mm which may lead to difficulties placing stairs into existing designs. Builders that use model designs should review their plans with their designer now to avoid delays in the new year.
